See me/ See me not is a photography project by Birmingham based Romanian photographer Oxana Bischin. The first part of this project was exhibited internationally at Centrala Gallery (See me/ See me not, Birmingham, 2020) and INK Kultur Gallery in Berndorff, Austria ( … Zigeuner? Roma? Böse? Arm? Frei?…,2019). The first part of this gallery showcases photographic and cyanotypic portraits of the Kalderash Roma community of Brateiu, Transylvania, which the author documented while working on a project in 2016. The Kalderash Roma community of Brateiu, Transylvania is one of the few remaining groups that preserve a long line of Roma traditions and crafts including hat moulding and coppersmithing – work that has actually landed their name of Kalderash (Căldărari-Romanian for ‘pot’ ). Some of the more established crafters in the community have since been internationally recognised for their craft and excellence which opened a gate for international showrooms at makers festivals , collaborations with industrial designers and even exhibitions. The second part of this gallery showcases portraits of the Roma community of Balsall Heath in Birmingham, UK, which the author documented through a DYCP grant awarded by Arts Council UK in 2021.
